Col. City wins final regular-season game

February 1, 2013

COLUMBIA CITY — Fans at Columbia City’s girls basketball game against Huntington North Thursday wouldn’t have known that the Lady Eagles hadn’t practiced since Monday.

Columbia City head coach Amy Shearer said the team has been battling the flu all week, but the Lady Eagles still managed a 53-49 win in their last regular-season game.

The ill-timed sickness showed in the first quarter, as Huntington jumped out to a 17-8 advantage. The Lady Vikings hit three 3-pointers from three different shooters.

Thursday was the preliminary event for the finals, which will be Saturday. Winners of Saturday’s sectional races will advance to the state meet on Feb. 9. Qualification for state can also occur for swimmers or relay teams who meet the state standard cutoff time to round out the field to 32 entrants per event.
