Whitko linkers look to rebound in 2013

SOUTH WHITLEY — Whitko’s boys golf team is looking to rebound in 2013 from its first losing season in five years.

The Wildcats return four letterwinners and will have two newcomers.
Junior Daniel Zawlocki, the 2012 MVP for the Wildcats and an All-Three Rivers Conference golfer, returns.

He is joined by senior Colton LeTourneau, sophomore Cole Bechtold and sophomore Matt Hathaway as letterwinners.

Also returning for Whitko in 2013 will be Andy Bringman, Robert Hopkis, Cole Findley, Matt Myers and Bill Stump.

Whitko has some promising newcomers.

Whitko, Marion split baseball opener

SOUTH WHITLEY — Whitko’s baseball team finally opened its season, after difficult weather conditions, Saturday and split a doubleheader with Marion.

The Wildcats dropped game one by a margin of 9-5, but came back to capture game two by a 10-9 score.

A home run proved to be the winning blast in game two. Tanner Gaff hit a solo shot to break a 9-9 tie and give the Wildcats the eventual win.

“Tanner Gaff made a great hitting adjustment on his solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning that proved to be the game winner,” Whitko Head Coach Erik Hisner said.

’Busco boys, Col. City girls lead county

SOUTH WHITLEY — It was the same results at a different place in this season’s Whitley County track meet.

As it ended in 2012, Columbia City’s girls and Churubusco’s boys track teams led the county.

Whitko hosted the rivalry event and placed second in both the girls and boys meets.

The competition was the first outdoor meet for all three schools, who have hardly had the opportunity to practice outside due to cold, snowy conditions.

Polar opposite from last season, which saw temperatures as high as the 80s in March.

Whitko JV defeats West Noble

LIGONIER — Whitko’s JV baseball team scored a victory over West Noble Thursday.

The Wildcats beat the Chargers 6-2. Sophomore Tanner Hughes was the winning pitcher for Whitko, allowing just one run and striking out nine in four innings. Riley Anderson went the rest of the way for the Wildcats, allowing just one run as well.

Eagles capture baseball season-opener

CHURUBUSCO – A four-run first inning was all the Churubusco team needed to earn a win in its season opener.

The Eagles would go on to add four more runs throughout the game on their way to an 8-0 victory over Woodlan.

Brent Simmons was dominant on the mound for the Eagles. In six innings of shutout work, the junior allowed only one hit. Simmons also struck out 11 batters. Hayden Kilgore closed the game out for ‘Busco on the mound with a perfect seventh inning.

Churubusco softball digs in for 2013

CHURUBUSCO — Churubusco softball head coach Wayne Gibson didn’t have any seniors on his team last year.

The 2012 ‘Busco team still managed to compile a 11-16 record, while finishing 4-6 in the Northeast Corner Conference.

Last year’s Lady Eagles’ season ended in a close 2-1 loss in the first round of sectionals. The opponent that fell them: eventual 2012 2A state runner-up Adams Central.

“We felt we competed last year, and we feel we can compete in the conference and our sectional this year,” said the ‘Busco coach.

O’Dell commits to Earlham

COLUMBIA CITY — The third Columbia City football player this week has named his college choice.

Buddy O’Dell, senior defensive tackle for the Eagles, has committed to attend Earlham College and plans to major in human development and social relations.

He’s seeking a minor in business and nonprofit management.

Whitko netters capture opener

LIGONIER — Despite the weather, Whitko’s girls tennis team scored a victory over West Noble in its opening match of the year.

The Lady Wildcats defeated the Lady Chargers by a final of 3-2. Whitko earned a victory at No. 1 singles from senior Laura Hippensteel, who won 6-1, 6-4.

Whitko’s Aressa Tackwell won the No. 2 singles match, 6-2, 6-2.

The clinching match for the Lady Wildcats was a comeback win at No. 1 doubles. Laura Alfieri and Abby Marshall erased a 3-0 hole in the first set to win 6-4, 6-4.

Area gridders compete in memorial meet

COLUMBIA CITY — The 2nd Annual Tyler Andreas Memorial Strength Meet was held March 16 at Little Turtle Elementary School in Columbia City.

The event involved football players from Churubusco, Columbia City and Whitko, who competed in several football-related drills, including the back squat, bench press and agility test.

Thirty-nine athletes overall took part in the event — which celebrates the dedication and warrior spirit of Tyler Andreas — while raising money for the scholarship named in his honor.

Neely makes college choice

COLUMBIA CITY — Stand-out Columbia City running back Adam Neely officially signed with the University of Saint Francis this week.

Neely was the Eagles’ running back and punter in the 2012 season, and despite breaking his leg in the second game of the season, Neely finished the year with a strong performance.

“His warrior spirit in coming back from a seemingly season-ending injury lifted up the entire team as he carried us to a victory in the sectional,” Columbia City Head Coach Randy Hudgins said.
