Roush to continue running with Hoosiers

November 21, 2013

COLUMBIA CITY— After dotting the record book at Columbia City, one Lady Eagle senior will carry on her career in Bloomington.

Samantha Roush officially signed last week to run track and cross country for Indiana University.

She is fresh off a cross country season that saw her take home 44th in the state meet.

Running at the state cross country meet in Terre Haute was nothing new for Roush, though.

The Lady Eagle senior ran at state all four years of her career, peaking with a 10th-place finish as a sophomore.

This season, she was the lone Whitley County runner at the meet.

COLUMBIA CITY— High goals and big achievements are the legacy Gabrielle Hazen is leaving behind as a Columbia City volleyball player.

And big goals are what she still has as she prepares to step onto the court as a Northwestern Wildcat.

Hazen officially signed with the university Friday in a ceremony at Columbia City High School.

When she officially dons the Wildcat purple, it will be a fulfilment of one goal.

“I realized a few years ago I could play in the Big Ten,” Hazen said.

Whitko downs Churubusco, 56-52

November 18, 2013

CHURUBUSCO — Clutch free-throw shooting down the stretch made the difference in Whitko’s win against Churubusco Saturday.

The Lady Wildcats won the Whitley County rivalry game by a final of 56-52.

Churubusco had a six-point lead heading into the fourth quarter. Consecutive steals and baskets from Whitko freshmen Brianna Cumberland and Aly Reiff cut the Lady Eagle lead to just one.

From that point, Whitko got to the line often enough to close the gap. The free-throw shooting was not perfect, but Cumberland knocked down four in a row to seal the win in the game’s final minute.
