Girls reaching quarter post of the season

WHITLEY COUNTY — Before the books close on the month of November, the girls basketball teams of Whitley County will have completed nearly 25 percent of their seasons.

Columbia City
The Lady Eagles are 3-1 and are heading for a Friday game at Fort Wayne North Side.
Columbia City has scored some big wins, avenging losses from last season by beating Marion and Fort Wayne Snider.
It was the first win over Snider in four seasons and the first in two against Marion.
Tuesday, the Lady Eagles lost their first game of the year, falling in overtime to Leo on their home floor in Columbia City.

Boys basketball opens season

WHITLEY COUNTY — Boys basketball officially began in Whitley County Wednesday.

In the Columbia City-Whitko rivalry game, the Eagles downed the Wildcats in South Whitley, 49-31.

Churubusco’s squad dropped an overtime game to Adams Central, after a last-second 3-pointer at the buzzer to win, 58-56.

At Whitko, Wildcat Dylan Cumberland was the leading scorer, tallying 16 points for the ’Cats. His teammate, Nate Walpole, was Whitko’s second-leading scorer.

Whitley County boys to tip off hoops season tonight

WHITLEY COUNTY — With one day until Thanksgiving, the boys basketball teams of Whitley County will tip off their 2013-14 seasons tonight.

Columbia City and Whitko will hold their traditional battle, set for the day before Thanksgiving. Churubusco will host Adams Central.

Last season, Columbia City picked up a 69-26 win against Whitko on its way to a 20-4 campaign.

The last time the Wildcats have gotten a win over the Eagles was in November of 2008, when they pulled out a five-point win against Columbia City.

Goree commits to volleyball at Ohio State

COLUMBIA CITY — A two-sport star at Columbia City will continue her career on the volleyball court at a Big Ten school.

Kalisha Goree, who just finished her senior year as a Lady Eagle, will go on to play volleyball at Ohio State University.

Goree will take her near year-round dedication to volleyball and apply it as a Buckeye, since she also plays club volleyball in addition to her time with Columbia City High School.

Playing at the next level has been a goal on Goree’s mind for years.

Whitko downs Huntington North

SOUTH WHITLEY — Whitko’s girls basketball team grabbed its first win against a Class 4A team in several seasons Friday against Huntington North.

Paced by 21 points from Aly Reiff, the Lady Wildcats beat the Lady Vikings 57-51.

The last time Whitko beat a Class 4A team was in 2008 against Warsaw.

The 3-1 Lady Wildcats handed Huntington North its first loss, knocking the Lady Vikings to 2-1 on the year.

Indian Springs boys hoops tip off season

COLUMBIA CITY — Indian Springs Middle School’s four boys basketball teams began their seasons this week with some close games.

The seventh-grade Stars opened their season with an exciting 28-27 win over Milford Middle School Monday.

With three seconds left in the game, tied at 27, Dalton Bell hit the second of two free throws to secure the win for the Stars.

They were led in scoring by Collin Wood with 16 points, followed by John O’Dell’s six, Bell’s four and Zach Slagal’s two points.

’Busco loses NECC opener on the road

GOSHEN — Churubusco’s girls basketball team had a rough start to its Northeast Corner Conference schedule for 2013-14.

The Lady Eagles lost at Fairifield, 60-24.

The defeat drops ’Busco to 1-3 on the year, and 0-1 in the conference.

For the Lady Falcons, it was their first game of the season overall, putting them at 1-0 to start the campaign.

Fairfield’s Jenny Kiper led all scorers with 24 points overall. Teammate Katie Yates chipped in nine.

Churubusco was led by Shelby Brockman, Alisha Farner and Montanta Martin with six each.

Richter to carry family name at Ball State

COLUMBIA CITY— Following in someone else’s footsteps and still having success can be difficult.

But Columbia City senior Andrea Richter has done that in the pool, first at her high school, and soon at her college of choice.

Richter signed this past Friday to swim at Ball State University. She will be the second member of her family to swim as a Cardinal.

Her older sister, Haley, is a senior at Ball State University this season, and has been part of several record-setting relay teams.

Andrea Richter has already qualified for the state meet as a Lady Eagle.

Roush to continue running with Hoosiers

COLUMBIA CITY— After dotting the record book at Columbia City, one Lady Eagle senior will carry on her career in Bloomington.

Samantha Roush officially signed last week to run track and cross country for Indiana University.

She is fresh off a cross country season that saw her take home 44th in the state meet.

Running at the state cross country meet in Terre Haute was nothing new for Roush, though.

The Lady Eagle senior ran at state all four years of her career, peaking with a 10th-place finish as a sophomore.

This season, she was the lone Whitley County runner at the meet.
