’Busco girls defeat Adams Central

CHURUBUSCO — Churubusco’s girls basketball team won its first of three games in a five-day span Tuesday.

The Lady Eagles got the three-home-game week, off to a good start with a 66-54 win against Adams Central.

Churubusco was paced by having three players in double digits. Montana Martin led the Lady Eagles with 18 points.

Jazlyn Needler was right behind with 17, and Brooke Yarnelle contributed 11.

Adams Central struck first, but ’Busco bounced back and had a two-point lead by halftime.

COLUMBIA CITY — Nearly every boys basketball team (with the exception of Churubusco, which returned all its players from last season) has been working to identify and fill the gaps left behind by players who graduated last year.

ISMS girls off to strong start

COLUMBIA CITY — Indian Springs Middle School hoops is in full swing, with both boys and girls squads taking the court in games.

The ISMS 7th-grade girls ran away with a lopsided 43-6 win to open the season at Harding last Monday.

All of the girls saw action in the opener and many contributed both offensively and defensively.

Ava Winters led all scorers with a quick 14 points off of several rebounds and some strong assists from teammates.

Grace Cotter added a solid 11 points. Brooke Ebersole poured in six points with some offensive put back baskets.

Key girls games on tap this week

WHITLEY COUNTY — Whitley County’s girls basketball teams are in different places this week.

Squads will either try to bounce back from defeat or keep momentum rolling as the first full week of December commences.

Columbia City is off to a 4-1 start. The Lady Eagles host Fort Wayne Dwenger Tuesday.

Columbia City will be looking for its third win of the year against a Summit Athletic Conference (SAC) foe.

The Lady Eagles beat Fort Wayne Snider 63-55 Nov. 19 and blew out Fort Wayne North Side 57-36 Friday.

Eagles drop home opener

COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City’s young basketball team is continuing to gain experience and improve in the early part of the season.

After beating county-rival Whitko in the season-opener Wednesday, the Eagles dropped a low-scoring, 46-35 game to Warsaw in their home opener Saturday night.

While the score writes its own story about the defensive efforts of both teams, the 11-point margin is slightly misleading.

Col. City wins Wawasee Invitational

SYRACUSE — Columbia City’s wrestling team made the trip to Syracuse Saturday to defend the Wawasee Invitational title the Eagles won last year.

Columbia City joined Whitley County rival Whitko, the host Wawasee Warriors, West Noble, Tippecanoe Valley and Fort Wayne South Side in making up the field.

The Eagles swept the competition, posting a 5-0 record on their way to the invitational crown, while Whitko finished third with a 3-2 record.

Whitko falls to fast Lion pace

LEO-CEDARVILLE — A speedy offense from the host Leo Lions was too much for Whitko Saturday.

The Wildcats lost to Leo by a final score of 79-46. The defeat puts Whitko at 0-2 on the 2013-14 campaign. It was the first game of the year for the 1-0 Lions.

Leo ran a high-pressure, full court defense that quickened the pace of the game, particularly in the second half. The Lions had 50 points combined from the third and fourth quarter.

Whitko Boys Basketball Head Coach Scott Wessel said his team had the correct strategy in its first game of the year against Columbia City — slow the pace.

Lady Eagles beat Eastside, 69-46

CHURUBUSCO — Churubusco’s girls basketball team used strong second and fourth quarters to land a 69-46 win over Eastside Friday night.

After facing a 16-11 deficit at the end of the first quarter, the Lady Eagles came back to score 23 points in the second, while holding Eastside to four.

Churubusco used a scoring attack from six different players in the second quarter to steal the lead — and never give it back.

Col. City rebounds from first loss, beats North Side

Fort Wayne — Columbia City’s Lady Eagle basketball team traveled to Fort Wayne to take on the 1-3 North Side Lady Redskins with the hopes of getting back in the win column following a heartbreaking home overtime loss to undefeated Leo.

The Lady Eagles used a pressure perimeter defense to negate the Lady Redskins main offensive threats and balanced scoring to down the host Lady Redskins by a 57-36 score Friday night.

Lady Tigers down Whitko 64-42 Friday night

WARSAW — A tough defensive effort from Warsaw proved too much for Whitko’s girls basketball team Friday.

The Lady Wildcats dropped a road contest to the Lady Tigers by a final of 64-42.

The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for the 3-2 Lady Wildcats and was the first win of the year for 1-3 Warsaw.

Warsaw’s press wore down Whitko as the game advanced, holding the Lady Wildcats to just 14 second-half points and six in the fourth quarter.
