4TO 2: New Haven tops Eagles

COLUMBIA CITY — The visiting New Haven Bulldogs made the most of their limited scoring opportunities and came away with a 4-2 Northeast Hoosier Conference win over the host Columbia City Eagle baseball team Thursday evening.

Columbia City pitcher Ross Elkins gave up only four hits on the contest, but Eagle errors and a combination of passed balls and wild pitches helped the visitors to the win.

SHUT OUT: CC tennis takes New Haven

COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City’s Lady Eagle tennis team got back on the winning track Thursday evening, downing Northeast Hoosier Conference opponent New Haven 5-0 at DeVol Field.

No. 1 singles player Rachel Flauding defeated New Haven’s Lindsey DeCamp in a three-set match. After dropping the first set 6-3, Flauding came back to take the second set 6-3, and then won the deciding third set in a tie breaker 7-6 (7-4).

EAGLES DOWN: Col. City edged by No. 9 Leo

COLUMBIA CITY — In a matchup of state-ranked golf teams, No. 16- ranked Columbia City fell to No. 9 Leo Thursday evening 153-155 at Eagle Glen.

Columbia City’s Spencer Klimek claimed medalist honors for the match with a one-under-par 35 on the front nine. Tyler Green was second for the Eagles with a 38.

’BUSCO SOFTBALL: Suffers tough loss

CHURUBUSCO — Churubusco’s softball team lost to Adams Central Wednesday night 10-0.
In a game that was never close, the Lady Eagles struggled to get on base, ending the game with only two hits.

The Flying Jets scored three runs in the first and two in the second to take an early 5-0 lead.

3-2: Lady Eagle tennis edged by Leo

LEO ­— Columbia City’s Lady Eagle tennis team took on the Leo Lady Lions Wednesday evening in a non-conference matchup at Leo. The Lady Eagles fell by a close 3-2 decision.

Wins for the Lady Eagles came at No. 3 singles and No. 1 doubles. In the No. 3 singles contest, Hannah Clark continued her solid play with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Leo’s Olivia Roth.

’BUSCO: Takes 5-3 win

CHURUBUSCO — A fifth-inning rally lifted Churubusco’s baseball team to a 5-3 win over Fremont Wednesday night.

After falling behind 3-1 in the first inning, consistency at the mound and solid fielding by ’Busco’s defense held Fremont scoreless for the next six innings.

PITCHERS: Lead ’Cats to win

SOUTH WHITLEY — Whitko baseball Head Coach Eric Hisner knew for his team to be successful this year the team's pitching staff was going to have to develop quickly. Hisner found out just how good his pitchers have become Wednesday night when the Wildcats faced a Wabash team with seven players hitting over .300. The Whitko pitchers held their own and threw the 'Cats to a 5-4 victory against the Apaches.

BIG FIFTH INNING: Key to Eagle win

GARRETT — A seven-run outburst in the fifth inning powered Columbia City’s Eagle baseball team to an 11-2 win over the home-standing Garrett Railroaders Wednesday evening.

The visiting Eagles picked up a run in the top of the first inning to go up 1-0. They held onto that lead until the bottom of the third inning when the Railroaders pushed across two runs to take a 2-1 lead.

POUNDED: Whitko softball takes Wabash

SOUTH WHITLEY — Whitko’s softball team took a big lead and was able to get some players into the game who earned valuable experience Wednesday.

Whitko got contributions from everyone on the way to beating Wabash 14-1 in five innings.

GOING 1-3: Eagle boys’ volleyball at Zionsville

ZIONSVILLE — Columbia City’s Eagle boys’ volleyball team traveled to Zionsville on Saturday, for a 10-team tourney at Zionsville High School. The Eagles finished the day with a 1-3 record.

Columbia City opened play against Lafayette Jefferson in what was the first meeting of the season for the two teams.
