58-47: Manchester outshoots Whitko boys

SOUTH WHITLEY — The Whitko Wildcats boys basketball team was struggling to hit field goals Saturday afternoon against Manchester. Three misses by the Wildcats could have kept Whitko in the game if they went down. But the shots didn't fall and the Squires were able to drive out of South Whitley with a 58-47 win against the ’Cats.

SECTIONAL RUNNER-UP: ’Busco girls

WOODBURN — Playing for a sectional championship is something all basketball players dream about. Playing against IHSAA Class 2A defending state runner-up Canterbury is usually not part of that dream.

Lady Eagles took on the wind, snow and Canterbury Cavaliers Saturday night at the Woodlan Sectional.
The Class 2A No. 2 Cavaliers, led by Whitley County native Darby Maggard, proved to be all they were billed to be, posting a 67-44 win over the Lady Eagles.

STATE FINALS: 3 wrestlers advance

FORT WAYNE — Eight Whitley County wrestlers took the next step along the path to an IHSAA individual state championship at Saturday’s semi-state, with three Columbia City wrestlers advancing to next weekend’s State Finals competition at Banker’s Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

EAGLES SOAR: Churubusco marches past Hamilton

CHURUBUSCO — Churubusco’s boys basketball team played host to the 4-13 Hamilton Marines Thursday night. The Class 2A 7th-ranked, 16-2 Eagles downed the visitors 71-36 in the Northeast Corner Conference match-up.

The boys varsity teams took the court with ’Busco jumping out to a quick 20-9 lead by the end of the first quarter. Senior Paul Forman led Churubusco with nine points in the quarter, including a dunk at the 3:13 mark.

By the end of the first half, ’Busco had built a 38-18 lead by forcing Hamilton into 16 first half turnovers.

COL. CITY DOWN: Chargers bury Eagles early

HUNTERTOWN — Fans traveling to Carroll Thursday night for the Columbia City boys’ basketball team’s final Northeast Hoosier Conference contest saw a game that was no-contest, as the host Chargers used an in-your-face defense and lights-out shooting to pound the visiting Eagles, 61-26.

The Chargers put the game on ice in the first quarter, forcing five Columbia City turnovers and connecting on 9-of-10 shots from the field, including five shots from behind the arc to put the Eagles in a 23-3 first quarter hole.

IHSAA SEMI-STATE: County wrestlers prepare

WHITLEY COUNTY — Eight Whitley County wrestlers will take the next step on the road to a possible IHSAA State Championship on Saturday when they compete in the Fort Wayne Semi-State at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum.

The top four finishers in each weight class will advance to the Feb. 21 State Finals to be held at Banker’s Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

Six wrestlers from Columbia City and two from Churubusco will be seeking Semi-State titles.

HEADED TO SEMI-FINALS: Lady 'Cats big third quarter fuels win

SYRACUSE — Sporting one of the winningest teams in recent history, the Whitko Lady Wildcats started down the road to an IHSAA Sectional basketball title on Wednesday night when they opened play at the Wawasee Class 3A Sectional.

The Lady Wildcats blew open a close game with a strong third quarter to down the West Noble Lady Chargers, 56-39.

Points were hard to come by for either team in the first quarter, as the Lady Chargers took a one-point, 4-3 lead into the second quarter.

HEADED TO SEMI-FINALS: Col. City halftime adjustments lead to win

OSSIAN —”That’s why we have a halftime,” said Columbia City Head Girls’ Basketball Coach Amy Shearer after the Lady Eagles’ 61-46 opening-round sectional win over the Heritage Lady Patriots Tuesday night.

Down three and shooting only 21 percent from the field at halftime, the Lady Eagles’ locker room adjustments unleashed a third quarter offensive and defensive barrage on the Heritage Lady Patriots, turning a three-point halftime deficit into a 14-point lead going into the fourth quarter.
