Town asked to prep for marathon’s second run

   COLUMBIA CITY — The second annual Veterans Marathon will take off down Van Buren Street Saturday morning with over 750 runners signed up to take part in the day’s three different races.
   After a successful first run, marathon officials are asking Whitley County residents to use safety and patience while on the road and at home.

Girls’ basketball tips off in county

   CHURUBUSCO — The Indiana high school girls’ basketball season tipped off in Whitley County Tuesday night with Churubusco playing host to Garrett.
   The Lady Eagles opened the season facing a Railroaders squad that went 16-9 last season.
   Despite holding a slim lead early in the first quarter, Churubusco was plagued by 28 turnovers. A 13-point lead at halftime for Garrett ballooned into a lopsided victory 53-25.

Stacking up against history

   Following a 50-7 loss Friday night to sectional champion Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger, the 2010 Columbia City Eagles were officially part of the record books.
   Despite coming up short for their first sectional title since 1993, the Eagles stack up well against some of the best teams Columbia City has put on a field in its 87-year history.

All-State list names five county runners

   The 2010 Indiana high school cross country season was a good mix of veteran experience and newcomers for Whitley County.
   The depth of talent in the county was shown in all-state honors named Monday by the Indiana Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches.
   Five runners in all were part of the list of the state’s best cross country runners. The county had its share of experience with Whitko senior Brian Menzie and Columbia City senior Renee Menzie.

’Busco weathers storm for title

   BERNE — “It’s a game of momentum,” Churubusco head coach Lee Etzler said. “It’s huge in the high school ranks. We’ve got to weather the storm when things aren’t going real well.”
   A cold and snowy Friday night greeted Churubusco in the class A sectional championship at South Adams.

Dwenger heartbreaks City, again

   COLUMBIA CITY — The old proverb states that all good things must come to an end. For the Columbia City Eagle football team the best season in recent memory came to an end Friday night at the hands of the Bishop Dwenger Saints in the finals of the Class 4A IHSAA sectional 11 finals. The Saints used a bruising running attack that gained  more than 400 yards and a defense that forced two Eagle turnovers to down Columbia City 50-7 at Max Gandy Athletic Field.

Stars align in class A title game

   Each week of the Indiana high school football postseason has had its share of tests for the class A Churubusco Eagles.
   The sectional opener was titled for its revenge of an early exit the year before to Adams Central.
   After getting by the Flying Jets, a road trip to Southern Wells pitted rushing against rushing with Churubusco coming out on top in a defensive battle 12-6.
   Sectional championship week has a new test for ’Busco with the high- scoring offense of the South Adams Starfires.

Col. City’s man of SI

   The 2010 Indiana high school football season has certainly been good to Columbia City quarterback Logan Rehrer.
   School passing records have fallen. A Northeast Hoosier Conference championship has been captured and an appearance in the sectional championship awaits Friday night.
   The QB at the top of all the Columbia City career passing records has another recognition to add to that list.

Title rematch gives City biggest test of season

   So far, the Columbia City football team has passed nearly every test that has stood in front of them.
New Haven, check. East Noble, got ’em. NHC championship, crowned. Return to the class 4A sectional championship, there.
   Back where they stood a season ago, the Eagles get a rematch at home Friday night against the team that ended their 2009 season in Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger (10-0).

A time of greatness

   With each week and another win added to the their records for the season, both Columbia City and Churubusco football are making their way up the records books at their respective schools.
   Much debate has been brought up about whether this could be the greatest high school football season for Whitley County.
   As the two Eagle squads head into the sectional championship week the seasons that stack up against 2010 are becoming less and less.
