Columbia City loses to Norwell

COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City came into Friday night’s game against Norwell with expectations of a tough competition.
“We knew they were going to be good,” Columbia City Head Coach Amy Shearer said. “We prepared as best as we could.”
The Lady Knights defeated Columbia City 54-30.
Norwell, which is ranked second in the Associated Press Class 3A poll, is undefeated at 6-0.
The Lady Knights beat Bluffton 74-12 and beat Homestead with a 3-pointer at the buzzer last Saturday.
The Lady Knights doubled the Lady Eagles’ score in the first quarter, 18-9.

'Cats fall to Manchester

SOUTH WHITLEY — Whitko Lady Wildcats fell to 3-5 Friday, losing to Manchester, 61-56.
In the first two minutes of the game, Whitko scored several baskets, jumping out to an 8-0 lead.
Lady Squire Kalya Flack hit a three pointer and on the following possession, Lady Wildcat Micaela Sylvester picked up her fourth point in one minute, keeping the lead at seven, 10-3.
Led by Manchester’s Meika Kennedy’s four points, the Lady Squires scored seven straight.
The first quarter ended with Manchester in the lead, 13-10.

'Busco falls to West Noble

LIGONIER — The Churubusco Lady Eagles Basketball team was defeated by West Noble Friday night, 57-20.
The Lady Chargers came out to an early lead, with an 11-2 edge at the end of the first quarter.
West Noble built on its lead in the second quarter, gaining a 25-7 advantage at halftime.
The Lady Chargers outscored Churubusco 17-5 in the third quarter to make the score 42-12.
The Lady Eagles scored the most points in the fourth quarter with eight. But West Noble added another 15 to end the game at 57-20.

Eagle swim tops Tippecanoe Valley

AKRON — The Columbia City swim team defeated Tippecanoe Valley decisively Thursday night in Akron.
The boys team won 129-49 and the Lady Eagles were victorious 121-46.
Both teams took first place in all 22 swimming events.
Devin Moore won the 100-yard butterfly in a close race.
“We called it a David and Goliath meeting because the other guy was so much taller than him,” Columbia City Head Coach Kristen Swonger said.
Moore’s Viking competitor got off to a quick start, taking the lead for the first 50 yards.
But Moore out-swam Tippecanoe Valley in the final strech for the win.

Chrubusco improves to 7-0 in NECC

CHURUBUSCO — The Churubusco Eagle wrestling team celebrated Senior Night with a 57-18 win over the visiting Central Noble Cougars.
The Thursday night Northeast Corner Conference win kept the Eagles’ conference record spotless at 7-0 while raising their overall record to 10-3.
Churubusco claimed wins in five of the seven contested varsity matches to go along with six forfeit wins to build an insurmountable lead.

Churubusco wrestling defeats Eastside Tuesday

CHURUBUSCO — Churubusco wrestling beat Eastside Tuesday night, 54-27.
Coming off Saturday’s win at the Northeast Corner Conference duals and Columbia City on Tuesday, the Eagles were eager to continue their win streak.
“They were ready for every match we had,” Churubusco Head Coach Sam Riesen said. “They showed a lot of heart and they fought all night.”
The Eagles won four matches by forfeit; Jacob Ferry, Clint Bechtold, Sam Siddons and Jason Nicodemus.

Col. City swim blows North Side out of the water

FORT WAYNE — Columbia City’s swim team beat North Side decisively Tuesday night in Fort Wayne.
The boys team won 131-44 and the girls defeated the Lady Redskins 119-56.
Columbia City placed first in all 24 events.
Head Coach Kristen Swonger was pleased with the swimmers’ finishes.
“The kids did pretty well,” Swonger said. “Some of them showed a lot of improvement tonight, causing shifts to the relay teams for the next meet.”

Col. City wins close game over ’Busco

COLUMBIA CITY — Despite rallying to get the score within five in the last four minutes, Churubusco lost to Columbia City Tuesday night, 52-43.
Whitley County’s Eagles gave the fans their money’s worth, with Churubusco cutting a 25-17 deficit into a three-point game in the third quarter.
The Eagles traded baskets in the first two minutes of the game, until Columbia City’s Brandon Gay knocked down a three to give the home team a 5-4 advantage.
Churubusco’s game plan was to alter the pace of Columbia City’s quick tempo.

Whitko girls victorious at North Miami, 64-29

DENVER — Whitko’s girls basketball team won its Three Rivers Conference opener at North Miami Saturday night, 64-29.
After a rough patch in their schedule (Elkhart Memorial, Northrop and Warsaw), the Lady Wildcats opened conference play with a decisive win.
“We knew going in this was going to be a big game for us to see where we were mentally after playing those tough teams,” Whitko Head Coach Brandon Bradley said.

Lady Eagles win in overtime

December 5, 2011

FORT WAYNE — After keeping Carroll from taking the lead throughout the entire regulation, the Columbia City Lady Eagles found themselves playing in overtime Saturday night in the Northeast Hoosier Conference opener.
The Lady Chargers hit a 3-pointer with 3.3 seconds left on the clock to tie the game at 37 and force an extra four minutes of play.
The Lady Eagles held on to win the game, 41-38, off free throws by Sarah Opliger and Sidney Bunyan.
Bunyan led the team in scoring with nine points and also chipped in a block, steal and assist.
