Fourth time’s a charm; ’Busco’s boys track wins C. Noble Invite four consecutive times

ALBION — Some may say the third time is a charm, but for Churubusco’s boys track team, the fourth time’s a charm, as the Eagles won the Central Noble Invitational for the fourth year in a row.

’Busco had 34 more points than its closest opponent, Westview, with 150 points.

Not far behind Westview (116.5) was West Noble (110.5). Garrett (74.5) in fourth, Central Noble (59.5) placed fifth and Prairie Heights (51) came in sixth.

’Busco golf tops Westview, Eastside

AUBURN — Churubusco’s golf team won a Northeast Corner Conference three-way match last Thursday, beating Westview and Eastside at Bridgewater Golf Course in Auburn.

The visiting Eagles shot a 185 led by Ryan Mayer with a 42. Mayer’s 42 also gave him runner-up medalist honors.

Beau Barkley and Parker Conrad had 47s, followed by Brandon Norris’ 49 and Brad Martin, who carded a 50.

Friday the Eagles hosted conference foes Fairfield and Hamilton.
Fairfield won the match with a score of 152, followed by Churubusco-161 and Ham-ilton-175.

Whitko, Col. City golf compete at Wawasee Invitational

COLUMBIA CITY — Whitko’s and Columbia City’s golf teams traveled to Wawasee Saturday for a delayed start at South Shore Golf Course after sleet covered the greens.

Fifteen teams competed in the invite, led by Warsaw with 308 strokes.

Whitko and Columbia City placed 12th and 14th, respectively.The Wildcats posted a score of 370 and the Eagles shot a 376.

Tyler Ostrom was the match-medalist with a score of 73 on the 18-hole, par 72 course.

’Busco loses NECC title game to C. Noble

FREMONT — Just 15 miles apart, the Churubusco and Central Noble baseball teams traveled over an hour to Fremont Saturday to play the Northeast Corner Conference title game.

Fending off sleet and cold temperatures, the Eagles were unable to hold off Central Noble, falling 8-5 to the Cougars.

Central Noble grabbed three runs in the top of the first inning, while ’Busco countered with one.

The Cougars tacked on another run in the top of the second inning to take a 4-1 lead.

Central Noble tacked on four more runs in the top of the seventh to take a lopsided 8-1 lead.

Wildcats win double-header; Whitko downs Southern Wells 10-6, 12-9 Saturday after rain delay

SOUTH WHITLEY — Saturday’s baseball double header between the Whitko Wildcats and the Southern Wells Raiders was delayed by rain, and the weather had the players and fans wondering if snow might also be a possibility.

The two games took very different routes to the same end.

In game one, the Wildcats broke on top with a big lead and then held on for a 10-6 win while in game two the host Wildcats had to come from behind several times to take a 12-9 win over the Raiders.

’Busco holds on for win; Eagles advance to NECC tournament championship game

HAMILTON — Churubusco’s baseball team fought off a seventh-frame Hamilton rally to defeat the Marines Friday night in the semi-final game of the Northeast Corner Conference tournament.

The Eagles had a 7-2 lead going into the bottom of the seventh inning.

With the Marines up to bat, Hamilton scored three runs, had to runners on base and the winning run up to bat.

The Eagles held on for the 7-5 win.

The game started off uneventful offensively.

The score was tied at one until the bottom of the third when Hamilton scored off a sacrifice bunt down the third-base line.

Col. City J.V. softball pummells North Side; Lady Eagles score 30 unanswered

COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City’s junior varsity softball team beat Northside Friday night 30-0.

Lady Eagle Amanda Sparks pitched a near-perfect game. Only one North Side runner got on base.

Anna Price, Maddie Clark, Jasmine Hiss, Cari Ann Freed, Maddie Barshaw,Ashley Williamson, Misty Hyndman, all drove in RBI’s.

Caitlyn Zoltek knocked a three-run homer about 250 feet and over the fence.

The Lady Eagles are now 7-3.

Lady Eagles pitch perfect game; win 10-0

FORT WAYNE — Pitchers Cassie Vodde and Krysten VanHouten combined for a perfect game Friday night at Northrop.

Columbia City’s softball team, now 9-5, beat the Lady Bruins 10-0 in five innings.

Though the Lady Eagles were scoreless in the first inning, they found their bats in the second, scoring seven runs.

Columbia City added another run in the third and two more in the fourth.
The Lady Eagles held onto their 10-0 lead through the fifth inning to win by the 10-run-rule.

Col. City baseball loses in extra innings, 6-4

COLUMBIA CITY — The Eagles’ baseball team lost in extra innings to Huntington North Friday night in Columbia City.

With the game tied 4-4 at the end of regulation, the Vikings scored two unanswered runs in the top of the eighth to rout the Eagles 6-4.

Connor Reed led the Eagles in hitting, going 3-for-4 with one RBI. Landon Rehrer had two RBIs, a run and a hit in three at-bats. Also recording hits were: Brandon Gay, Connor Slavich, Derek Lamle, Austin McCormick and Jacob Johnson.

Whitko’s Gensch to play baseball at Grace

WINONA LAKE — Grace’s baseball team has announced the signing of Whitko High School’s Richard “Wes” Gensch for the 2012-13 season.

Gensch has been a central member of Whitko’s roster the past four years as a pitcher and first baseman.

The 6-foot-3 high school senior was named Academic All-Conference in 2010 and 2011. He was also Whitko’s Most Improved Player as a junior.

“I felt like Grace was where God wanted me to be,” Gensch said.
“I want to continue developing my pitching skills and help the Grace program succeed. I am excited to play baseball for Grace this fall.”
