Columbia City hit the road in the Northeast Hoosier Conference Friday night keeping its record unblemished with a 62-45 win over Bellmont. The Eagles are off to their second consecutive 7-2 start under head coach Chris Benedict.

Fremont extends ’Busco slump

   CHURUBUSCO — It’s been almost a year to the day since Churubusco girls’ basketball saw its last win in the North East Corner Conference.
   Still in search of their first victory this season, the Lady Eagles (2-10) took to the hardwood at home against Fremont (7-5). ’Busco fought back from a nine-point deficit in the first quarter to tie the game three different times in the second.
   However, a 14-2 run before the half took Fremont’s momentuem into the second half where they went on to win 55-39.

’Busco preps for tourney atomsphere

   No, its not the postseason but it will feel like it next week for Churubusco basketball teams.
   It’s one-and-done atmosphere with the annual North East Corner Conference tournament throwing its 11 girls and boys teams into brackets with a championship at the end.
   “The NECC tournament is big,” Churubusco head boys’ basketball coach said. “It’s high on what we want to accomplish.

Churubusco seniors lead way in bounce back win over Woodlan

   CHURUBUSCO — After seeing its longest winning streak under head coach Michael McBride fall last week to Westview, Churubusco could have seen the season take a turn for the worse.
   However, this season is different for the Eagles with a ban of five seniors making a difference.
   “Losing last week to Westview was a tough loss for us,” McBride noted. “Practice needless to say has been intense. We needed to get back to doing some things we did prior and I think we did that tonight.

Forrester alone in Eagles takedown by Knights

   KENDALLVILLE — With the Indiana high school wrestling sectionals just a little over three weeks away the Columbia City Eagles began the second half of their season by traveling to Northeast Hoosier Conference foe, East Noble Wednesday.
   The Eagles ran into a veteran Knight team and came out on the short end of a 59-10 score.
   The Knights, who Columbia City coach Blane Culp described as “by far the third best team in the conference” claimed 11 of 12 contested matches with each team picking up a forfeit win.

   HUNTINGTON — The Columbia City wrestling team traveled south to Huntington North to take part in the 10 team Weston Close Memorial Wrestling Tournament at Huntington North High School Thursday. With scoring done on an individual basis, senior Justin Trigg led the Eagles to an eighth-place finish by placing third in the 140 pound weight class.

   COLUMBIA CITY — The Columbia City Lady Eagles used strong first and fourth quarters and a sterling performance from the free throw line to take the night cap of the NHC/ACAC Challenge winning 54-38    over a Garrett Lady Railroaders team that entered the day undefeated.
