Whitko inducts 2 into Hall of Fame

SOUTH WHITLEY — Whitko’s athletic hall of-fame welcomed two new members last week.

Jeff Schumaker and Mike Venable, Wildcat stars of the 1980s, were welcomed at halftime of the boys basketball game between Whitko and NorthWood.

Schumaker was elected for his role on the Wildcat golf teams. He played from 1984 to 1987.

He was the individual conference champion for the Three Rivers Conference for three years — 1984, 1985 and 1987.

Col. City preps for Mississinewa

COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City’s boys basketball team is working for its first sectional title since 2011, advancing to the semi-final game Friday night in the Norwell Sectional against Mississinewa.

The Indians are 13-7, and finished off the regular season with a four-game win streak, topped off with a victory over New Castle, 51-43.

“They had a really good year,” Columbia City Head Coach Chris Benedict said.

Columbia City fell to New Castle in the holiday tournament, 52-47, but Benedict said the Eagles have improved since that game.

West Nobbe ends Wildcat season

SYRACUSE — Whitko’s boys basketball saw its season end in a sectional quarterfinal game against West Noble Tuesday.

Playing one another for the second time this season, the Chargers came out victorious in the postseason game, 63-30.

West Noble also won the regular season game, 67-38.
The game opened with Whitko down early, 12-0.

The Wildcats pushed the score to 12-4, but then ran into a familiar problem.

Eagles blow past Bellmont, 52-27: Bachelder nets 21 in sectional opener

OSSIAN — Columbia City’s boys basketball team lived to play another day Tuesday night with an impressive 52-27 win over Bellmont in the sectional opener at Norwell.

After only topping the Braves 39-38 in the regular season, the Eagles took a lopsided victory Tuesday, building on their lead throughout the game to pull ahead.

Columbia City took a 15-7 advantage in the first quarter, with points from its top three scorers — Brachen Hazen (6) Mason Coverstone (6) and Justin Bachelder — including three 3-pointers.

Whitley County girls teams fall in sectional title games

Columbia City's girls basketball team and Whitko's girls basketball team both fell in Class 3A sectional championships Saturday.

Columbia City lost to Norwell, 74-61, and Whitko lost to NorthWood, 56-47.

Churubusco's girls basketball team lost a Class 2A sectional semifinal Friday night to Fort Wayne Canterbury, 82-46.

’Busco grabs win over Hamilton

HAMILTON — Churubusco’s boys basketball team picked up its second win in three games Thursday night, topping Hamilton on the road, 46-37.
Hamilton jumped out to a 13-6 lead in the first quarter, but the Eagles worked their way back into the game in the second quarter, outscoring the Marines 16-10 to make the score 23-22 in favor of Hamilton at halftime.

The Eagles mounted on their comeback in the third quarter, topping Hamilton 8-4 to take the lead, 30-27, going into the fourth quarter.

Freshman Eagles face third loss

COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City’s freshman boys basketball team played its make-up game with Carroll Wednesday night in Columbia City.
The Eagles were handed their third loss of the season, falling 51-38 to the Chargers.
Carroll took a 34-16 advantage at halftime, after several Columbia City shots weren’t falling.
The high-scorer for the Eagles was Jordan Bechtold, with four 3-pointers and a final tally of 18 points.
Rob Wood scored eight points.
Andrew Jagger added a 3-pointer of his own to go with his five points.

Norwell drops Col. City, 60-47, in Ossian

OSSIAN — Saturday night’s weather wasn’t the only inhospitable thing, as the Columbia City boys’ basketball team traveled to Norwell for a Northeast Hoosier Conference match-up.

The Eagles fell behind early to a Norwell squad that held the Eagles to eight first-quarter points and maintained control throughout the contest, on the way to handing Columbia City a 60-47 loss.

The Eagles fell behind early in the first quarter, as the host Knights came out firing with two threes from David Vogel on individual moves against the Eagle defense.

11 county grapplers head to semi-state

HUNTERTOWN — Eleven Whitley County wrestlers cleared the second hurdle on the way to a possible individual wrestling state championship.

Columbia City led the way, advancing six of its seven Carroll Regional qualifiers to next Saturday’s Fort Wayne Semi-State. Churubusco will have four wrestlers in semi-state competition, while Whitko advanced one wrestler.

Columbia City took third as a team, being nudged out of second in the last bout of the day by Leo, the New Haven sectional champion.

Richter qualifies for state in swim; Bosselman named best coach in sectional

WARSAW — For the first time in a few years, a Columbia City girls swimmer for the IHSAA state swim meet.

Senior Andrea Richter took home first place in the 100-yard butterfly in the sectional in a time of 1:00.53.

With the win, Richter received one of the 20 automatic berths to the state meet that goes to each sectional’s champion.

The honors kept coming for the Lady Eagles. Head Coach Debi Bosselman was named coach of the year for the sectional.

She piloted Columbia City to a fifth-place finish, with the Lady Eagles rolling up 225 points.
