Adjustment to mayor's wage proposed

COLUMBIA CITY - The first reading of ordinance 2011-13 took place Tuesday night at the Columbia City Common Council meeting.
The ordinance pertains to the 2012 salaries for elected officials.
Only one adjustment is being proposed: a raise of over $7,000 for the office of the mayor of Columbia City.
Mayor Jim Fleck iterated that the raise has nothing to do with an individual, but rather the position itself.
“I see it as compensation for a position,” said Fleck. “You treat it as you would according to any raises or denial of raises.”

Margaret Whitcomb, 71

CHURUBUSCO — Margaret (Peggy Getts) Whitcomb, formally of Fish Lake in LaPorte County, died at 9:09 p.m. Monday, Nov. 21, 2011, at the Visiting Nurse and Hospice Home, Fort Wayne.
Mrs. Whitcomb was born in South Bend, on June 19, 1940, a daughter of Leo E. Lewis and Ester (Bata, Lewis) Hagedorn.
On Jan. 11, 1980, she married Fredrick D. Whitcomb, preceded her in death in 2002.

Betty Snider, 80

Betty Ann Snider, 80, of Columbia City, passed away Saturday, Nov. 19, 2011 at 11:30 p.m. at Visiting Nurse and Hospice Home, Fort Wayne.
Born Feb. 5, 1931, in Urbana, she was the daughter of Fred and Fern (Overholser) Gable.
She was a Whitley County resident her entire lifetime and attended Larwill High School.
Her first marriage was to Robert L. Gause and on Jan. 1, 1973, she married her second husband Joseph Snider, Jr. at Jefferson Chapel United Methodist Church.
She worked at Blue Bell, Viking and Parkview Whitley Hospital in the laundry department.

Cletus Hart, 91

Cletus F. Hart, 91 of Fort Wayne, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2011.
He was born March 14, 1920, to the late John E. and Anna G. (Armand) Hart.
Mr. Hart retired from Fort Wayne Community Schools in 1982 and from Kingston Retirement Center after 10 years.
He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 3846, a member of American Legion #157 and was a World War II U.S. Army veteran.

Donald Bowling, 47

Donald Ralph Bowling, Jr., 47, of Titusville, Fla. died Oct. 7, 2011.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
He was preceded in death by his father, Donald Ralph Bowling, and his mother, Mary Jeanette Kilgore Bowling.
He is survived by his wife, Donna Wheeler of Titusville; his daughter, Selina Bowling of Jacksonville, his granddaughter, Nataly Gilbert of Jacksonville; and his sister, Leslie Giese.
A memorial service will be held at Great Commission Fellowship, 211 S. Hopkins Ave, Titusville, Fla. on Saturday at 6 p.m..

Betty Walter, 85

COLUMBIA CITY — Betty Jean Walter, 85, of Columbia City, died at 2 a.m. Monday, Nov. 21, 2011, at Parkview Whitley Hospital where she had been a patient since Nov. 14.
She was born June 4, 1926, in Noble County, a daughter of Guy and Veneita (Earmick) Strouse.
Her formative years were spent on a farm off Ind. 9 near Chain-O-Lakes State Park.
She graduated from Wolf Lake High School.
On May 3, 1945, she was united in marriage to John M. “Jack” Walter. They always made their home in Columbia City.
Her memberships include Tri-Lakes Baptist Church.

Cindy Crawford, 39

Cindy C. Crawford, 39, a resident of Churubusco, died Sunday, Nov. 25, 2011, at Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne.
She was born in St. Petersburg, Fla. on Nov. 25, 1971, a daughter of George Edward and Cindy Charmaine Palecki.

Thanksgiving holiday will alter recycling pickup

The curbside recycling program for Whitley County will be adjusted due to the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday. Whitley Environmental will not be running on Thursday Nov. 24 and will run one day behind. Thursday recycling will be picked up on Friday and Friday recycling will be picked up on Saturday, according to officials.

Area school administrator busted for possessing and dealing drugs

FORT WAYNE - A female Fort Wayne Community Schools assistant principal was arrested for dealing and possession of drugs after police found multiple pounds of marijuana, paraphernalia and cocaine in her Millennium Crossing home Monday.

A joint investigation between the Fort Wayne Police Department Vice and Narcotics Division and the Illinois State Police led to the arrest of Shadwaynn Curry, 41, also known as Shadwynn "Mikki" White.

State Police to Conduct Sobriety Checkpoint

In Whitley County

Whitley County, IN-The Fort Wayne District of the Indiana State Police will be conducting a sobriety checkpoint in Whitley County during the late evening hours on Wednesday, November 23rd and continuing into the early morning hours of Thursday, November 24th. In an effort to reduce the number of alcohol-related automobile crashes, the sobriety checkpoint will target the impaired driver and will be utilized in an area identified as having a high number of alcohol related crashes.
