Respondents to the most recent online poll at www.thepostandmail.com showed that 56 percent "always" attend Old Settlers Days in Columbia City, Turtle Days in Churubusco â€“ or both of the popular Whitley County festivals. Both festivals occur later this month.
COLUMBIA CITY â€”Â Multiple people were injured Thursday afternoon in a crash at U.S. 30 and CR 300 E.
An SUV was T-boned before it rolled into the ditch on the north side of U.S. 30.
Multiple patients were transported to the hospital.
The accident is currently under investigation by the Whitley County Sheriff's Department.
COLUMBIA CITY â€” Laurie Butts, 52, didnâ€™t really know she loved butterflies until she moved to a new home in a bean field near Tri-Lakes a few years ago.
In April 2005, Butts was walking on her property, which is surrounded by eight acres of grasslands, a pond and a well-pathed woods and thatâ€™s when she fell in love with bugs.
â€śIt was the first spring we lived here,â€ť said Butts, who shares her home with Beth Hauenstein.
Portside Pizza will host a pair of fundraisers designed to raise money for the annual Tri Lake fireworks. On Saturday, beginning at 2 p.m., a hog roast will be held which will include a silent auction, a corn hole tournament and live music. Anyone wanting to donate items to the silent auction should call Portside Pizza at 691-3333. On Saturday, June 16, a golf outing at Crooked Lake Golf Course will be held. The event will begin at 10 a.m. Sign ups will be held at Portside Pizza.
COLUMBIA CITY â€” The Whitley County Consolidated School (WCCS) board approved the appointment of Jacob Hoag as the principal of Northern Heights Elementary School at their meeting Monday.
The position required attention since Robert Hoke retired after 27 years of service.
After screening several candidates, Dr. Patricia Oâ€™Connor said the interview team had a recommendation ready for the boardâ€™s approval.
COLUMBIA CITY â€” Amy Lybarger, district conservationist with the Natural Resource Conservation Service in Columbia City, came before the commissioners Monday, requesting the approval of a project concerning the highway.
The area Lybarger is concerned about is CR 600 N., approximately a mile and a half west of Ind. 109. After investigation, Lybarger said they realized there was a tile blow hole.
â€śWe are very nervous over this situation,â€ť said Lybarger. â€śWe want to get it fixed and repaired as fast as possible. It would be a very easy repair, and quick repair.â€ť
Lonnie L. Van, 63, of Fort Wayne, passed away Sunday, June 3, 2012.
Born Sept. 1, 1948, he was the son of Charles and Dorothy (Bowman) Van, Jr.
Survivors include his wife, Kay Van; two children; two brothers and one sister.
A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m. at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home, Columbia City.
Memorials may be given in memory of Mr. Van to the donorâ€™s choice of charity.

Shawnee resident, DeLois Jean Scott, 79, passed away June 5, 2012, in a midwest city nursing home.
DeLois was born May 19, 1933, in Wolfe Lake, the daughter of Burtis & Ina Mae (Johnson) Cunningham. She graduated from Larwill High School.
On March 10, 1962, she married Jack W. Scott. For 37 years she worked as a buyer for Dana Weatherhead Tool Plant in Columbia City.
FORT WAYNE â€” Betty Jo â€śB. J.â€ť (Dazey) Thiel, 60, a resident of Fort Wayne and native of Wolf Lake, passed away at 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday, June 5, 2012, at her home. She had been in declining health since December.
Mrs. Thiel was born in Wolf Lake on Sept. 30, 1951, a daughter of James C. â€śJ. C.â€ť and Mary (Moeller) Dazey, and spent her formative years there.
Columbia Cityâ€™s track team recently honored its top athletes.
