Robert Fudge

Robert A. Fudge, 95, of Lake Township in Allen County, went peacefully on the morning of Monday, May 27, 2013, at the Hamilton House in Fort Wayne.
Mr. Fudge was born in Eel River Township Sept. 15, 1917, a son of Dean and Pearl (Arnold) Fudge. He graduated from Churubusco High School in 1935.
As a young man, he served during World War II in the U.S. Army’s 12th Armored Division, 714 Tank Battalion A Company, under General George Patton.

Nancy Nagi, 55

Nancy Jayne (Jagger) Nagi passed away April 29, 2013, at her home in Metolius, Ore. She had been battling cancer for more than a year and a half.
She was born Nov. 23, 1957, in Columbia City and attended grade school at Thorncreek School. Her family moved to Bakersfield, Calif. and where she attended and graduated from East High School.
She married Saleh Nagi April 24, 1981. They had three children together.
Nancy worked in nursing homes as an aide and then went into medical records.

Whitko falls to Eastbrook in sectional

DECATUR — Whitko’s baseball team saw its season come to an end in its sectional opener against Eastbrook Friday.

The Wildcats fell by a final score of 12-7.

Whitko dug a hole and could not get out of it. The Panthers jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning and did not relinquish the advantage.

“Their leadoff guy reached on an error,” Whitko Head Baseball Coach Erik Hisner said of the first inning. “That kind of set the tone for the game.”

Columbia City netter Celine Rongos is headed to the Indiana State Finals in LaPorte next week after winning her No. 1 singles match in the semistate at Culver Academies Saturday.

Rongos topped Morgan Smith, of Bremen, by a 6-4, 6-3 score. Smith was undefeated until she met Rongos. Last year, Smith made a run in the individual state tournament.

“I am very pleased with how Celine played tonight,” Columbia City Head Coach Kathleen Myers said.

“She dug deep and came out with a win. Her hard work in the off-season is paying off.”

Rained out: Sectional games rescheduled

FORT WAYNE — Sectional games for both Columbia City’s and Churubusco’s baseball teams have been postponed.

Both Eagle teams were originally scheduled to play Monday, but were unable to get their games in due to rainy weather.

Columbia City’s game has been rescheduled for today at 6:30 p.m. at Carroll High School.

As before, the Eagles will play Snider in the semifinals.

Churubusco’s sectional semifinal game against Adams Central has been rescheduled for today at 7:30 p.m. at Indiana Tech.

Remembering the fallen

Though Monday’s Memorial Day parades in Columbia City and South Whitley were called off due to rain, a special service was held at the American Legion in Columbia City to honor fallen veterans.

Joyce Gaff, 90

Joyce N. Gaff, 90, of Columbia City, passed away at 9:46 p.m. Friday, May 24, 2013, at Parkview Whitley Hospital.
Born Aug. 4, 1922, in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, she was the daughter of Nathaniel C. and Lillian A. (George) Newman.
She lived in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, and then moved to Churubusco in 1944, and then to Florida in 1987.
In May 2006, she moved to her present home in Columbia City. She graduated from Patterson Collegiate Institute with a Senior Matriculation in Windsor in 1941.

Stephen Jantz, 62

Steven P. Jantz, 62, a resident of Churubusco, passed away at 5:16 p.m. Friday, May 24, 2013, at Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne. He had been seriously ill for the past week.
Mr. Jantz was born Oct. 10, 1950, in Fort Wayne, a son of John “Jake” and Mary (Tumbleson) Jantz. He spent his formative years there and graduated from Northside High School in 1969.
On June 4, 1977, he was married in Churubusco to Nanette K. Anderson, and lived all of his adult life in Churubusco.

Simon Luther, 94

Simon L. Luther, 94, of Columbia City, died at 11:33 p.m. Friday, May 24, 2013, at Parkview Whitley Hospital where he was admitted Wednesday.
He was born Sept. 4, 1918, in Washington Township, a son of Walter and Vera (Sheets) Luther. His formative years were spent in Washington Township. He graduated from Washington Center High School.
On Sept. 21, 1940, he was united in marriage to Betty L. Gradeless. They made their home in Columbia City for four years before moving to Laud. In September 2005 they returned to Columbia City.
