Underdog Lady Eagles cut down by Garrett 75-28

   LAGRANGE — Going into the class 2A Prairie Heights girls basketball sectional not many probably had Churubusco at the top of their lists for winning a title.
   However, after a emotional semifinal win over the host Lady Panthers, the Lady Eagles carried their hopes to a title shot.
   Churubusco (7-14) took its longest winning streak (four) in more than  a decade into the championship Saturday night.

No love found for Columbia City in February slump

   COLUMBIA CITY — Marion, a boys’ basketball team that averages 70 points a game, was held to 52 by Columbia City Saturday night. However, the Eagles were unable to convert on the offensive end losing 52-38.
   Marion’s speed and high pressure defense forced 19 turnovers, causing the Eagles to miss out on scoring opportunities.
   “When you have 19 turnovers in a game like that, it’s going to be hard to come out on top,” Columbia City head coach Chris Benedict said.

Uplifting win gives ’Busco title shot

   LAGRANGE — There is a win every successful program can look back on. The one win that turned the tide and built something more than just a winning team.
   Friday night, after seasons of struggle, Churubusco girls’ basketball might have found that break.
   The Lady Eagles stared down a 9-2 first quarter deficit to host Prairie Heights in the class 2A sectional semifinal. A switch to the full court press brought with it a fourth consecutive win for Churubusco, 56-46, and a berth in the sectional championship Saturday.

Richter wraps up at state

   INDIANAPOLIS — As just one of three freshmen in the 50-meter freestyle race at the Indiana high school state final’s opening day Friday, Lady Eagle Andrea Richter made her debut in 30th-place.
   Columbia City’s only sectional champion in girls’ swimming went into the event seeded 29th out of 32 swimmers.
   Richter swam to a time of 25.87 in the first of four qualifying heats. The top 16 swimmers moved on to today’s finals at the Indiana University Natatorium on the IUPUI campus.

Familiar exit: City bumped by NorthWood

   COLUMBIA CITY — We have all seen sporting events where a team digs a themselves a big hole to start the game only to come back with a furious rally to win at the end.
   Friday night’s class 3A sectional semifinal between the host Columbia City Lady Eagles and the NorthWood Lady Panthers was not that game.

City’s NHC hopes dashed at Carroll

   COLUMBIA CITY — A win Thursday night had higher stakes attached to it in boys’ basketball Northeast Hoosier Conference.
   In the final games of the conference schedule, Columbia City held on to hopes of a championship barring a little help.
   The Eagles controlled their destiny for, at worst, a second-place finish. A win locks it up.
   However, Columbia City’s chance at a NHC crown were dashed on the road Thursday by a senior-lead Carroll 47-40.

’Busco win keeps NECC hopes alive

   CHURUBUSCO — The host Churubusco boys’ basketball team used balanced scoring and a stingy high-pressure defense to run out to a 20-point lead at halftime en route to a 59-39 win over Northeast  Corner Conference foe Hamilton Thursday.
   The Eagles got 15 points each from senior Hunter Nicodemus and juniors Josh LeFever, and Tyler Arrowsmith. ’Busco forced 22 Hamilton turnovers for the game.

Menzie takes running talents to Huntington

Whitko senior Brian Menzie signed his letter of intent to join the track and field and cross country teams at Huntington University. Menzie was a state qualifier in cross country this season finishing 48th and collecting a sectional championship in the process. The Wildcats most experienced distance runner holds a school record in the 1600-meter event in track and field at 4:33.93 and is a two-time Three Rivers Conference champion in the event. Menzie will be majoring in ministry at Huntington University. Sitting with Menzie are parents Phil Menzie, left, and Debbie Menzie, right.

Etzler stepping down as AD, staying on as coach

   After Monday’s Smith Green Community School board meeting, Churubusco High School began the search for a new athletic director.
   Current AD Lee Etzler announced he will step down from the position effective at the end of the current school year.
   Etzler notes time with his family was the driving force behind his decision.

Final obstacle stands in way of nine wrestlers

   One final hurdle stands in the way of nine wrestlers from Whitley County. Saturday, the Indiana high school individual semistate tournament splits the contenders from the pretenders.
   Across 14 different weight classes, 224 wrestlers are vying for a top-four finish that will get them to Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis for the 73rd annual individual state finals tournament.
   The path for five Wildcats and four Eagles goes through the Woodlan semistate held at Allen County War Memorial Coliseum.
