Doris Elaine Van Houten, 83, a resident of rural Columbia City, went to be with the Lord at 12:46 p.m. Thursday March 28, 2013, at Parkview Regional Medical Center, Fort Wayne where she was admitted Saturday. She was born September 8, 1929 in Ari, Allen County, Indiana, a daughter of the late Wyland and Iva (Gump) Zumbrun. Her formative years were spent in Union Twp., Whitley County. She graduated from Coesse High School in 1947.
On Feb. 18, 1949, she was united in marriage to Dale Obert Van Houten. They have always made their home in Whitley County. Dale died Oct. 9, 1994.
Born in Larwill, Sept. 6, 1931, Janet Martin Gustafson went home to be with the Lord March 2, 2013.
Her loved ones that preceded her in death include her father, Therman Martin; her mother, Edna Yoqulet Martin and her son, Jay Calvin Gustafson.
Janet is survived by her husband, Clyde; her children, Lee (Martha), Penny (John) Gallagher and Eric (Maria); her sisters, Violet Martin and Joan Ulrich; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Rick Tulley, 60, a resident of Tri-Lakes, passed away at 6:20 p.m. on Thursday, March 28, 2013.
Mr. Tulley was born in Wolf Lake on Sept. 19, 1952, a son of Gloyd and Edna (Fisher) Tulley.
Surviving relatives include his wife, Cathy, three children, a brother, three sisters and a granddaughter.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Sheets & Childs Funeral Home in Churubusco with Rev. Brad Fredrickson, pastor of Tri Lakes Baptist Church, officiating.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday from 4 to 8 p.m.

Jerry Lee Shaffer, 75, of Washington Township, died at 12:55 p.m. Tuesday, March 26, 2013, at Oakbrook Village, Huntington, where he had been a resident since April 22, 2009.
He was born Sept. 2, 1937, in Whitley County a son of Landy and Cora (Hennemeyer) Shaffer. His formative years were spent in Washington Township. He attended Lincoln School in Huntington and graduated from Columbia City Joint High School in 1957.
On Oct. 5, 1960, he was inducted in the U.S. Army. He was honorably discharged Oct. 4, 1966.
Fae Elizabeth Carter, 92, of Columbia City, widow of Ralph B. Carter, Sr., passed away at 12:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 26, 2013, at Miller’s Merry Manor, Columbia City. She had been a patient there for the past two years.
Mrs. Carter was born in Fort Wayne April 27, 1920, a daughter of Ruben Clyde and Veronica Elizabeth (Ness) Butler, Sr., and spent her formative years in the Arcola area. On March 11, 1937, she was married in Warsaw to Ralph B. Carter, Sr. She had lived at Blue Lake for a period and had also resided in Gainsville, Fa.

Carey D. Landis, 101, of Mentone, died at 12:55 a.m. Sunday, March 24, 2013, at Miller’s Merry Manor of Wabash.
He was born Nov. 18, 1911, in Kosciusko County to John and Sadie (Dirck) Landis.
He was married to Jessie F. Thomas Aug. 1, 1953, in Winona Lake. She preceded him in death Sept. 30, 1979.
Carey had been a school bus driver for Talma School, as well as a carpenter and an electrician. He worked at the hardware store in Mentone and farmed in his early years.
Robert “Bob” David Stanley, 86, of Columbia City, passed away Saturday, March 23, 2013, at Parkview Oaks, Columbia City.
Born Dec. 15, 1926, in Arcola, he was the son of Roy Cuppy Stanley and Ruth B. (Besson) Stanley.
He was a graduate of Washington Center High School in 1944 and served in the U.S. Navy.
Onita Jean McSurley, 84, passed away Thursday, March 21, 2013, at 6:10 a.m. at Miller’s Merry Manor, Warsaw.
Onita was born Sept. 3, 1928, in Dwale, Ky. to Jack and Emma (Ellis) Osborne. She and Loni McSurley were married Jan. 21, 1946, in Prestonsburg, Ky.
However, Onita lived most of her life in Kosciusko County. She was a packer for R.R. Donnelley and Sons Co. for 23 years before retiring in 1990.

Darrell Eugene Leap, 92, of Columbia City, passed away March 21, 2013, at his home surrounded by his family.
Born Aug. 18, 1920, in Cicero, he was the son of Lester and Nellie (Newby) Leap.
He served in the U. S. Army during World War II and was a Purple Heart recipient. On Oct. 5, 1939, he married, Geneva Sylvester in Greenfield. He was the owner of Leap Excavating and lived in North Webster from 1952-1968, Knapp Lake from 1968-2004 and has lived in Columbia City since 2004.
Betty L. Hodges, 89, a resident of rural South Whitley, died at 12:30 a.m. Thursday March 21, 2013, at the home of her daughter. She had been in failing health.
She was born May 10, 1923, in Carroll County, a daughter of the late Leo F. and Axie E. (Cross) Landis.
Her formative years were spent in north central Indiana. She graduated from Larwill High School in 1941.
On June 1, 1941, she was united in marriage to George E. Hodges. They made their home in on a farm in rural South Whitley. Mr. Hodges died Nov. 27, 1995.
