COLD CASE: State police seeking public’s help on 40 year old murder

(Fort Wayne, IN) - Cold Case investigators with the Indiana State Police are seeking the public’s assistance in trying to solve a murder case that occurred nearly 40 years ago in either Kosciusko or Noble County.

According to Detective Kevin Smith, then 17 year old Laurel Jean Mitchell was last seen leaving work at Epworth Forrest in North Webster at approximately 10:15 p.m. on August 6, 1975. She was found dead the next day in the Elkhart River in rural Noble County.

HOMEGROWN AND HANDCRAFTED: Brewing the perfect cup

COLUMBIA CITY — Within the past few years there has been an increasing interest in homegrown foods, handcrafted goods, and made-to-order meals.

The Post and Mail is beginning a series titled “Homegrown and Handcrafted” to highlight members within in the Whitley County community who exemplify this trend.

The series begins with Columbia City resident Chris Garau who imports and roasts his own handcrafted coffee blends.

COLUMBIA CITY — A former Columbia City nurse who has been charged with multiple felonies has pleaded not guilty in Whitley County Circuit Court.

WHITLEY COUNTY (June 30, 2014) -- Heat and humidity will make it feel like temperatures are around 95 degrees by this afternoon. Actual temperatures will be around 88. Dew points will be in the 70s which will make humidity almost oppressive this afternoon.

Strong storms are possible late today and tonight as a weather system approaches from the west. These storms will bring gusty winds of up to 60 mph. Stay alert and ready for any strong or severe storms that might head this way.

Central Indiana sheriff's deputy dies in car crash

A central Indiana sheriff's deputy has died after his patrol car crashed while he was on duty.

Indiana State Police say 31-year-old Tipton County Deputy Jacob Calvin of Kempton died when his car traveling at a high rate of speed went out of control Saturday night on a rural road and rolled several times, ejecting him from the vehicle. The 2½-year veteran deputy died of his injuries at a hospital.

TEXTING ARRESTS: Hoosier 'law' met with resistance, little enforcement

A three-year-old law barring Indiana drivers from texting while driving has generated more frustration than tickets from police officers, who say the law makes it hard to prove a driver is in violation.

The 2011 law was a follow-up to a 2010 measure banning people under the age of 18 from using cellphones while driving. The texting law prohibits drivers from using a phone or electronic device to send or read a text message or email while operating a moving vehicle.
