BE PREPARED

December 26, 2012

Be prepared when traveling during inclement weather....

If travel is necessary during any period of a storm, make sure to have a fully charged and functioning cell phone.
The Indiana Department of Homeland Security also recommends carrying blankets, extra water, a small shovel and other items which may be helpful if a driver finds trouble on the road.

If you become stranded:

•Make sure to have at least a quarter tank of gas in the vehicle before leaving. This will help prevent the fuel line from freezing.

WINTER WEATHER DRIVING

December 26, 2012

The Indiana Department of Transportation offers these hints when driving in winter weather:

•Accelerate gradually on ice or snow to avoid slipping and sliding.
•Drive slowly and carefully to avoid rear-end collisions and sliding on curves.
•Allow greater distance behind the car ahead. It takes more time to stop on snow and ice.
•Brake early, break slowly, never slam on the brakes. For cars with anti-lock brakes, press the pedal down firmly and hold it. For those cars without anti-lock brakes, gently pump the pedal.
•Avoid using cruise control.
•Avoid abrupt steering maneuvers.
