Laura Walker, 93

December 19, 2011

WOLF LAKE — Laura Bell Walker, 93, a former resident of Wolf Lake, died at 9:50 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 15, 2011, at Heritage Park senior living, Fort Wayne.
She was born June 14, 1918, in Whitley County, a daughter of Henry and Rada (Grace) Londt.
She began her education at Grace School and completed it at Jefferson Center High School.
On Sept. 26, 1937, she was united in marriage to Clyde W. Walker.
They made their home in Wolf Lake. In 1971, they moved to Crooked Lake. In 2004, she moved to Fort Wayne. Mr. Walker died Nov. 30, 1998.

PATRIOTIC PUPILS: A daily duty thoroughly enjoyed

Doing their daily American and Hoosier duty are Andrew Hall and Rylee Gardner. Each day these fourth-grade students at South Whitley Elementary School raise the United States and Indiana flags and every day they lower them. Hall and Gardner have learned the proper way to fold the flags. They both feel honored to do this task, they said.

COLUMBIA CITY – Indiana Congressman Mike Pence, a Republican candidate for governor and national political figure, has been secured as the keynote speaker for the Whitley County Republicans’ Lincoln Day Dinner, 7 p.m. Feb. 23 at a date to be determined, according to Matt Boyd, Whitley County GOP chairman.
Further details will be announced later.
“This is an honor to be hosting one of the few principled congressmen we have,” said Boyd.

Whitko falls to Tippy Valley

SOUTH WHITLEY — After having as much as a 25-16 lead in the second quarter over Three Rivers Conference Foe Tippecanoe Valley, the Vikings rallied to win 59-40 in Friday night’s boys basketball game at Whitko.
Former Wildcat Coach and current Tippy Valley Head Coach Bill Patrick added to his countless number of wins on Whitko’s court.
Patrick was inducted into the Whitko Hall of Fame before the game.
Two of Tippy Valley’s top scorers, Tanner Andrews and Nick Kindig, kicked off the game with the opening four points, their first of 37, collectively.

Columbia City defeats East Noble

KENDALVILLE ­— Columbia City boys basketball continued its winning ways Friday, traveling to East Noble High School and routed the Knights, 59-43.
Daniel Woll got started early, grabbing the first defensive rebound of the game after two missed East Noble shots.
He was rewarded with the ball on the other end and put in a shot for the first Eagle points.
After three consecutive missed shots by the Knights, Woll stopped the fourth attempt himself, recording a block.
Derek Hinen and Drew Benedict also began contributing from the onset.

LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT: Keith and Frances Nicodemus will celebrate seven decades of bliss on Christmas Day

COLUMBIA CITY — He took one look at her and knew she was going to be his bride.
What Keith Nicodemus didn’t know was that Frances would be his bride for 70 years.
Keith and Frances were skating at the Happy Valley Roller Rink in Columbia City but didn’t know each other.
“I was with Eldon Anderson and I told him that girl was going to be my wife,” said Keith.
Eldon told him he was crazy.

KEEP YOUR SMOKE TO YOURSELF: State mulls immediate smoking ban next month

Indiana House Speaker Brian Bosma said Thursday that lawmakers may seek passage of a statewide smoking ban before the nation’s attention turns to Indianapolis for the February Super Bowl.
Bosma, R-Indianapolis, said he may speed through a statewide smoking ban since Indianapolis’ City-County Council on Tuesday voted down a proposal to ban smoking in the city ahead of the Feb. 5 Super Bowl.

Jeanette Dawson, 83

Jeanette H. Dawson, 83, a resident of rural Huntertown, died at 1:20 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 15, 2011, at the Visiting Nurse & Hospice Home in Fort Wayne.
She was born Nov. 1, 1928 in Woodburn, a daughter of Herman and Emma (Riebersal) Woebbeking.
On Dec. 27, 1947, she married Max Dawson
He preceded her in death in 1982.

J. LeEtta Wagner, 91

December 16, 2011

J. LeEtta Wagner, 91, of Columbia City, IN passed away at 8:40 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 15, 2011 at Miller’s Merry Manor Inc., Columbia City.
Born April 4, 1920, in Jefferson Township, she was the daughter of Lester and Ethel (Hollenbaugh) Brock.
She grew up in Whitley County and Oregon. She attended Laud School and graduated from Jefferson Center High School with the Class of 1938.
After her marriage to Raymond LaVern Wagner on June 14, 1941, in Jefferson Township, they lived in Allen County for 14 years.

Ernest Remaklus, 75

CHURUBUSCO — Ernest J. Remaklus, 75, a resident of Churubusco, died at 1 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 15, 2011, at Provena Sacred Heart, Avilla, after a brief illness.
He was born in Fort Wayne Oct. 16, 1936, a son of Paul and Alvira (Schmit) Remaklus.
He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.
On Oct. 2, 1983, he was married in Fort Wayne to Glenda Boschet.
